Academic Goals: Throughout the school year, students will be encouraged to participate in English class and expected to make new growth in the content areas of reading and writing. Students will be exposed to new reading and writing skills that will give them the opportunity to focus a balanced instruction in Language Arts that is exciting and challenging. Students will be preparing for the Virginia Standards of Learning tests that are administered in the spring of 2017. Students will prepare to take the writing portion of the test in March. The WRITING SOL is divided into two sections: grammar/mechanics and a five paragraph essay. This writing SOL will be administered over the course of two days. During May students will take the READING SOL that focuses on comprehension, vocabulary, and text structure.

Assessment: Includes but not limited to the following: class work, worksheets, quizzes, formative and summative tests, unit tests, remediation tests, written essays, and class projects/book studies. Homework is given if the student doesn’t finish his/her classwork.

Redoing Assessments: At the teacher discretion, tests may be retaken if the student did not completely master the intended content or skills, and IF the student has demonstrated sincere effort to prepare for the second assessment. Retesting is a privilege, not to be taken for granted.

Grading:Most test grades and essays will count twice. All other grades will count only once. It is the student’s responsibility to make-up any missed assignments or tests. Students have the same number of days missed to make-up assignments and/or tests.
